Idaho is a gem, actually known as the Gem State. 

The state is full of so much beauty from open fields to tall mountains. I am amazed by all the beauty within the state, all over. But my favorite place, that I happen to also call home? Salmon, Idaho. 

Salmon is a rural little town located near the border of Idaho and Montana. With a population just over 3,000 people we have a small little town with lots of character.  

If you're looking for an adventurous getaway, Salmon, Idaho might just be the perfect destination for you. Nestled in the heart of the Rocky Mountains, Salmon offers stunning natural scenery, a variety of outdoor activities, and a charming small-town feel.

Things to Do in Salmon

One of the main attractions in Salmon is the Salmon River. Known as the "River of No Return," it's the longest free-flowing river in the lower 48 states and offers some of the best whitewater rafting in the country. There are a variety of outfitters in Salmon that offer guided rafting trips, ranging from mellow scenic floats to heart-pumping Class IV rapids.

If you prefer to stay on land, there are plenty of hiking trails in the area that offer stunning views of the mountains and the Salmon River. You can hike around Williams Lake or to Goldbug Hot Springs. 

For a more relaxing activity, check out the Sacajawea Interpretive, Cultural and Educational Center. The center honors Sacajawea, a Shoshone woman who played a vital role in the Lewis and Clark expedition. You can learn about her life and the history of the area through interactive exhibits, art displays, and educational programs.

Where to Stay in Salmon

There are several lodging options in Salmon, ranging from rustic cabins to cozy bed and breakfasts. One popular option is the Stagecoach Inn, which offers comfortable rooms and a restaurant with a menu featuring locally sourced ingredients. Another option is the Solaas Bed and Breakfast, which offers charming rooms and a gourmet breakfast each morning.

If you prefer to stay closer to nature, there are several campgrounds in the area. 

Whether you're looking for outdoor adventure or a peaceful retreat, Salmon, Idaho has something for everyone. With its stunning natural beauty and friendly small-town atmosphere, it's a destination worth exploring.

Salmon Whitewater Park, Island Park

Explore the Island Park in Salmon. The Island Park is right under the Main Street Bridge of the Salmon River. You will often see children wading the river, boats passing by and most likely a lot of kayaks at the Salmon Whitewater Park. You can sit and watch the water-lovers kayak through the white rapids. You can walk and explore the entire Island. This is one of my favorite places in town. You can easily access the Salmon River right in town. It's a great meet up with friends to enjoy the warmer months. Plus it's so beautiful with trees and a small glimpse of the mountain range. This is also a dog park, if you bring a pet. Please pick up after your pet and bring a leash. 

Sacajawea Center

The Sacajawea Center has the best view for a walk while visiting Salmon, Idaho. Whether you need to stretch your legs or want to visit the Interpretive Center, the Sacajawea Center is a stop for the views. The Center has a walking path with educational stops so you can learn more about the area, animals and more. There are teepees, trees and a great energy-burner for children. There are two paths a short walk or a longer walk along the river. If you want to explore and see more go on the longer walk! 

Williams Lake

If you want to enjoy a lake head down Highway 93 South and over the Shoup Bride to Williams Lake. A decent drive on a dirt road, take your time and sight see. You can enjoy water toys and swimming. There are two docks and is usually a hot spot especially on a s unny day. Pack a lunch or grab one from the Odd Fellows Bakery before you head up there for the day.

Sharkey Hot Springs

I love the Sharkey Hot Springs, I live near them and are easily accessible. You may have heard about Goldbug Hot Springs, an attraction in the Salmon area. The Sharkey Hot Springs are built pools and you can drive up to them. About 17 miles south of Salmon on Highway 28. If you want to hike - go to Goldbug. If you want to just drive up and soak, go to Sharkey.

The Night Owl

Need somewhere to enjoy a drink? Once known as the Owl Club and established in 1936 the original owl with arrows still adorns the outside of the building on Main Street. The Night Owl is a historical building in Salmon. The large owl on the outside of the building is nearly impossible to miss. Enjoy a drink at the smoke-free establishment. They have different drink menus in addition to the "normal" bar drinks. They often host open mic nights and bands. The bar is cozy with different seating options. Make this a stop! 

Savage Grill

If you on the search for a sweet treat especially during the warmer months Savage Grill is my stop for the best milkshakes in Lemhi County. They real and thick shakes are the best treat to the hot summer months in Salmon. The shakes are thick and creamy and a real favorite. They have so many flavors, so go try one. 

My favorite: A good ole' chocolate shake

Odd Fellows Bakery 

The Bakery offers fresh breakfast pastries, breads, sandwiches, local granola, the best chocolate chip cookies - the list goes on forever. But this little spot is a MUST in Salmon. Grab a latte, enjoy a breakfast pastry or sandwich. You will want to grab a loaf or bread to take with your or my favorite a fresh sourdough baguette.  

My favorite: Breakfast Sandwich - Crescent, Pesto Aioli, Ham, Provolone, Tomatoes, Onions and comes with two steamed eggs on the sandwich. It's so delicious.

The Cornerstone Gifts & Antiques

WARNING: You will find something you want to buy here. They have to many great things from Salmon, Idaho souvenirs to antiques and hard to find gifts. It will take you a minute to go through this store and all the treasures they offer here. Make sure you make your way to the back to Fleurish Floral and their build your own succulent station, you can take home piece of Idaho with you. 

Goodenow Designs

Take home a gorgeous piece of jewelry like turquoise, opals, gemstones - just some amazing pieces and made right here in Salmon, Idaho. If you took a river trip make sure you go into Goodenow and get a "river bracelet." They are only available exclusively in her shop. 

Bertram's Salmon Valley Brewery

Brewed right in their restaurant Bertram's has a full menu plus a menu of homemade beers they make in house. Bertram's recently re-opened after being closed after two and a half years over COVID. They are fully open and brewing. It's one of my all time favorite spots for a burger and fries or the salad bar. 

Arfmann's Four Seasons

Don't forget to buy a SALMON IDAHO t-shirt. You'll want to head to Arfmann's Four Seasons. This is Salmon's local clothes store. You can get anything you may need for your trip or something you forgot but they have some great Idaho souvenir shirts. 

Rise and Shine Espresso

If you are going to need coffee while you are visiting head to Rise and Shine Espresso you can got thru the drive thru or sit inside. They have WiFi access if you need that as well with some outdoor seating.
