How to Prep Your Kids for Winter Photos + Outfit Ideas

How to Plan and Prepare for a Winter Photo Session

Winter photo sessions can be absolutely magical. The crisp air, snow-covered landscapes, and soft, diffused light create a dreamy backdrop for capturing special memories. However, planning a session during the colder months comes with its own set of challenges.

The unpredictable winter weather can be brutal, especially when factoring in the ages of those participating—particularly young children. If you have little ones who struggle with the cold, you may want to reconsider a winter session or take extra steps to prepare them for the chilly temperatures.

That being said, I completely understand why so many families want to embrace the snow for their photos. It’s undeniably beautiful and adds a stunning, winter-wonderland feel to your images. If you're set on a winter session, here are some key tips to ensure everyone stays comfortable, warm, and most importantly—happy—throughout the shoot!

1. Layer, Layer, Layer

Layering is the ultimate secret to surviving a winter photo session. Not only does it keep everyone warm, but it also allows for stylish outfit choices without compromising comfort.

Consider investing in "photo-ready" outerwear, such as:

  • Pea coats
  • Military-style jackets
  • Stylish puffer coats
  • Wool coats with structured fits

Chunky sweaters with thermal layers underneath are another great option. Don’t forget about accessories—scarves, hats, and mittens not only add warmth but can also be fun elements in your photos.

Pro Tip: Layer their socks, too! Double up with stockings or thermal socks to keep those little toes warm. Cold feet can lead to discomfort quickly, so this small step can make a big difference.

2. Choose the Right Location & Time

As your photographer, I’ll select a location that works best for your family’s needs. Some areas might have windbreaks, easy access to warm-up spots, or simply offer the best scenic views without requiring too much exposure to the cold.

The time of day also plays a role. Midday sessions work best in winter since the sun is at its highest point, providing a little more warmth. However, if you love that dreamy golden-hour glow, we can make it work with extra preparation.

3. Make It Fun with Playtime

I always incorporate movement and play into winter sessions—especially when kids are involved. The goal is to keep them engaged, laughing, and distracted from the cold.

Simple games like:

  • Running races
  • Snowball fights (gentle ones!)
  • Playing "Simon Says"
  • Twirling in the snow

These activities not only keep everyone warm but also capture the natural, joyful expressions that make for the best candid moments. Before the session, let your kids know that it's going to be a fun experience! Build excitement by telling them they get to play games, move around, and maybe even have a little snow adventure.

4. Bring Warm Drinks as a Treat

One of the best ways to warm up during a chilly session is from the inside out. Pack a thermos with hot chocolate, apple cider, or warm tea to sip on during breaks.

To make it even more exciting for kids, bring along mini marshmallows or whipped cream. You can even use the warm drinks as an incentive—"Let’s take a few more photos, then we’ll have a hot cocoa break!"

If you’d rather not bring drinks along, stopping at a nearby coffee shop or drive-thru for a post-session warm-up is another great idea!

5. Hand & Toe Warmers are Game Changers

Hand and toe warmers are inexpensive, yet incredibly effective for keeping everyone comfortable. They last for hours and can be placed inside gloves, pockets, and shoes to help fight off the cold.

Tuck them into your little one’s coat pockets so they can warm their hands between shots. Slip them into boots to keep toes toasty while standing on the snow-covered ground. They’re available for around $1.25 each and are well worth it!

Bonus Tip: Keep tissues handy for runny noses! The cold air can cause sniffles, so stashing a few tissues in pockets can save the day.

A winter photo session doesn’t have to be uncomfortable—it can be an exciting and memorable experience with the right preparation. Dressing appropriately, keeping kids engaged, and having warm-up strategies in place will make all the difference.

If you're considering a snowy session, I’d love to help plan one that fits your family’s needs while making sure everyone stays warm and happy. Let’s create some magical winter memories together!

OUTFIT IDEAS:

Winter photos mean more layers. Here are some great outfit ideas from Old Navy. I searched their site for coats/jackets and they built the outfits. They have some great ideas. Don't forget to pull from your own closet to use and utilize. Which one is your favorite one?
